WHO IS MY MOUTH AND WHY DOES SHE MATTER TO ME?

In 2024, we’re reading Jamieson Webster’s Disorganisation & Sex (Divided Publishing, 2022). Convening around topics like sexuality, disability, and orality as well as their practical applications in the creative economies, these sessions will challenge creative practitioners to generate new material, make professional connections, and stimulate their research interests.

Our cheeky title is meant to draw attention to the physiological role of the mouth in psychosomatic and sexual development. As our primary means for consuming food and water, the organ that allows us to speak, and a cavity that sits just below our brain, the mouth — and the oral habits that arise from our mouthbound experiences — uniquely colors our memory and influences how we taste the world.

Following Webster’s lead, we’ll examine how our oral fixations govern our artistic decision-making and how the structures of the mouth — like the teeth, jaw, tongue, and throat — can become instruments for creative output. Organized in a show-and-tell format, participants are encouraged to use the sessions to brainstorm inroads to their own creative and critical projects.

$$$

Psychoanalysis gains new and profound purchase when used as a vehicle for economic critique. Economies, we believe, are libidinal long before currencies flow through them. Using Disorganisation & Sex as a tasting guide, we’ll look for means to represent, interrogate, and perhaps monetize the mouth’s role in the distribution of capital — whether as cash or as power — and search for deeper connections between the oral cavity and its financial input-outputs.

COLLABORATION

Participants are encouraged to group together and develop creative projects in response to Webster’s text and the discussions that ensue during REGROUP.
